multiple indirections through object methods

I've been trying to get something like the following to work, but I can't figure out if PHP has any facilities/hacks for making it work:

PHP Code: $obj=&build_tree();
$obj->findById('my_id')->some_method();

The objects are returned by reference by both build_tree() and findById(), so I'd think there'd be a good shot to get it to work. So far, I've failed miserably. For the record, I'm using PHP version 4.3.2, and using PHP 5 is not an option at this time.

Any thoughts, anyone
