Do you think a tester's role is shrunk in agile software development?
|

|
Many project managers tell their testers, Oh! We are working in agile development, so we need to wrap things quickly. And to be able to do that, if you find a defect, report to the developer immediately and get it fixed. No need to document the defect. On being asked, why, the obvious answer is as a part of agile development we need to ensure that we minimize documentation, save time and hence reduce cost. Also, since Agile talks about being collaborative, the tester needs to discuss the test case with developer and assist him in his development. What role is the tester playing |

I am interested in knowing what are your pain points around test automation What keeps you awake at nights
Some of the common ones are:
1. Lack of good resources
2. automation takes too much maintenance
3. Showing ROI is a challenge. |

I've been struggling with this idea recently. In general (there are some exceptional case), we don't ship test automation code to our customers. But it is important to have well designed and robust test automation. But there should be something that we gain for test automation development. What would that be |

Automation tools provide automated functional and performance testing for environments including Java, SOAP, CORBA, HTML, WAP, client/server, UNIX, and Windows. This article has been created as a guide to help testing professionals select, understand and implement functional test tools in any organization. Due to the large number of test automation tools available I have followed the 80/20 rule and selected the most popular as a base for this article. However where necessary other products including, Test Management, performance test and defect tracking suites will be mentioned.
This base includes the following:
Rational Robot (as included in Rational TestStudio) 2001
Rational Visual Test 6.5
Mercury WinRunner 7
Segue SilkTest 5
Compuware QA Run 4.7
Go below link and clear your understanding and decide which tools is perfect for your organisation.

In Agile Testing, testers adapt to rapid deployment cycles and changes in testing patterns. It involves the process of testing from the clients perspective at a very early stage it self.
Relaying just on manual and intuition testing is not enough; you need to automate to deliver on time. Your degree of automation will depend on the nature of project and of course your budget to invest into automation tools and scripting effort. The advent of many open source tools can ease up the purse a bit though. |

Just to get your opinions and insights (I'll give mine later) on this. |

More often than not, when there is a test automation discussion, the first question being asked is Which tool do you use\t I have noticed that, software test automation succeeded after a series of failures. Another challenge faced by test automation for mature software products is that automated test procedures are never quite the same as manual test procedures. They can be similar, but some things will need to be different because you no longer have an intelligent, perceptive human being watching every test and able to make reasonable assumptions about the source of errors. |

My company, eXept Software, has a testing tool, called expecco, which provides an exciting approach for graphical modeling of test cases.
Tests are presented as UML-activity diagrams and can be expanded by drag & drop with extensive block libraries to check functionality, security and performance of a wide range of systems (web, gui, hardware, ...). |
