How to increase application performance?

Good morning all, I am looking for lists of guidelines or tips for writing efficient sql queries to help to increase application performance and query tunning, and the reasons of using them. These tips including using NOT EXISTS instead of NOT IN and never use NOT on an indexed column etc. If you have the lists, can you share with me You can send them to wujee@yahoo.com. Or can you send me a link where I can find them

How do I calculate the impact/system requirements for when we increase load by 1/3rd?

, in the near future we will be increasing the number of sessions connected to our core system by about a third (1300 sessions up from 1000 connected sessions currently). Assuming the workload of a session is constant,has anyone got any experience/ideas on the best way to calculate the impact in the current system of the increased load, and how to decide the changes to be made to the existing system -Bob

Pctincrease!

Hi all! Working on Oracle v8i 8.1.6.0.0 with Os as NT. Query: 1.Is it ok to have Pctincrease set to 1 in Production DB at the client's place for Implementation so that SMON could automatically coalesce free extents whenever required! Would LMTs(Locally managed Tablespace) be ok for this or ordinary Tablespace be ok. Or should I set it to 0(pctincrease) as of now in our Development DB we are having Pctincrease set to 0.

Question about the advice to increase the shared pool

, I think I have a caching problem in the shared pool. I'm trying to find the bottleneck. Recently I visited the J.Overy's site and tried a script to tune the db. Some parts of the script result in an advice to enlarge the shared pool. My question is: why should I increase the shared pool while there is enough free memory in the db Here are some results (the script is attached): Code: GetHit PinHit Namespace Gets Ratio Pins Ratio Reloads Invalid. --------------- ---------- ------- ---------- ------- ---------- ---------- SQL AREA 26926736 0.6253 116522478 0.8250 215442 949865 TABLE/PROCEDURE 121807093 0.9991 153601258 0.9973 176855 0 BODY 32547 0.9892 31417 0.9848 83 0 TRIGGER 5654523 0.9909 5654574 0.9904 2864 0 INDEX 10151 0.7033 10960 0.6376 0 0 CLUSTER 61844 0.9987 64876 0.9975 0 0 OBJECT 0 1.0000 0 1.0000 0 0 PIPE 0 1.0000 0 1.0000 0 0 ----------------------------------------------------- Increase the shared_pool_size because of the following: -------------------------------------------------- SQL AREA: gethitration is less than 85%: -->,625 INDEX: gethitration is less than 85%: -->,703 !!!!I suggest that you increase shared_pool_size!!!! Space increase while Export

Hi , I have a serious space issue with my 8i server running on Sun E3500, Ultra sparc. The problem is related to export utility. I exported a user from ptroduction to my staging area with compress = n, and ater with compress = y. The amount of space occupied by the tablespace dedicated for this schema shoot up 3 imes than the actual one in prod. I later had to export the same schema on staging to test/development region. I again tried to export with compress = y and n. The space shoot up to 12times actual one. Is there a way I can get rid of such space increase. Actual size in prod was 205Mb and in staging it is around 700Mb and now in testing area it is 3.2Gb. Can anyone of you let me know the reason as well as remedy for this. Anywork around available

pctincrease set to 1 and auto-coalesce

Hi everybody ! I heard that the pctincrease tablespace's default parameter has to be set to 1% to force SMON process to coalesce free extent. Is that always true in 8.1.7 release Can I trust this rule

I executed the following sql to find ratio. SELECT REQ.VALUE|| ':' ||ENTRIES.VALUE "SPACE REQUEST RATIO" FROM V$SYSSTAT REQ,V$SYSSTAT ENTRIES WHERE REQ.NAME='redo log space requests' AND ENTRIES.NAME='redo entries' Results 53:1684533 = 1 : 31783 I have also read that the ratio should be no more than 1 : 5000 The buffer is currently set to 163840; os block size : 1024. Does this mean that I nead to increase the log_buffer size Does anyone know what size it should be increased to Cheers Suresh

sqlldr increase the oracle process memory usage, why?

I am using oracle 8.1.7 on windows 2000 and I found that when I using sqlldr to load a 4M datafile to oracle the memory usage shown in the task manager increase, is this normal After I loaded 70 such datafile, I found that the memory usage increase from 310M -> 470M. Why I am using "APPEND" inside the sqlldr control file. I've tried to use "REPLACE" instead of "APPEND" in the control file. Then I found the memory usage increase rate had drop down a little bit but still increasing. Is there a way to stop it
